THE GLORIOUS PAST OF SMB ST.COLUMBA'S MILITARY BAND
SMB St. Columba's Military Band has not always been what it is today. It has gone through a lot to reach its position today. Let's take a step down memory lane to recall the history of our school band.
The foundation of the band dated back to the year 1990. At the time, the word 'band' was barely known and only few members were recruited. This continued for another year, 1991. Instrument were limited and so, attracted few people.
However, in 1992, things began to change. More members were recruited and they totaled up to around 40 people. More instrument were introduced; recorders, melodians or pianica, bugle, lyrabell and more percussion instruments. A band major, Voon Yen Ling, was eleted to lead the band.
The band continued growing and in 1993, Jacqueline Tan was the band major and the president while the vice president was Voon Yen Ling. The band began to get popular. It performed very well and pleased the public a lot. It was then selected for the 36th National Day parade in Kuching . With its outstanding performance, it was selected as one of the 6 best bands in the parade.
The year 1994 brought the band up another ste towards glory. It expanded even more and was classified a Brass Band. Newer brass instrument were introduced. Students became more interested and joined the band, increasing membership to aroung 60 people. The president at that time was still Jacqueline Tan, but a new vice president, Melissa Wong, was elected. Happy with the progress, Miss Chan, emloyed music instructors to coach the band so that it became even more outstanding. They were Mr.Chew from Kota Kinabalu, Mr. Hashim and Miss Chan from Singapore and even a Japanese instructor called Mr. Nonami.
Under their coaching, the band improved and became a Military Band in 1995. Ever since, it has been growing and improving to its present state and it will continue growing for it still has a long journey ahead.
